TOP 3 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE DURING HOLIDAY TRAVEL No ratings yet.

Are you one of the million Americans traveling to be with family or friends this holiday season? AAA predicts nearly 99 million Americans will travel fifty miles or more from home for the holidays. And nearly 400,000 burglaries take place in the United States between November and December each year, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Tucson property managers recommend taking some extra security measures to protect your homewhile you’re away. Here are the top 3 tips to keep your home safe during holiday travel.

1.) Hold your Mail: If you plan to be away from home for a while, perhaps to ring in the New Year out of town, be sure to put your mail on hold. Full mailboxes and piled up newspapers on your front walkway send an obvious message to burglars that you’re not there. Already out of town but forgot to stop at the post office to hold your mail? USPS has a fast and convenient way to put your mail on hold via their easy to navigate website which can be accessed from your computer, tablet, or smart phone.

2.) Social Media Secret: In the information age of oversharing it can be tempting to share your travel plans on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. But Tucson property management companies recommended that you slow your roll and keep your vacation plans a secret. Even if your page is set to private, there’s still a chance that alerting others that you won’t be home exposes your property as a target for robberies. Got awesome photos of you up at your parent’s snowy cabin for the weekend? Post them after you return. The world of social media can wait a few extra days to see your holiday shots.

3.)   Ask for Help: Whether it’s a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member asking someone you rely on to keep an eye on your home while you’re away is a great way to better ensure its safety. Don’t have someone to keep an eye on your place? If you have an alarm system, it’s not a bad idea to let the alarm company know that you’ll be out of town and to immediately call the police if there’s any suspicious activity. If you don’t have an alarm system, take extra precaution to lock windows and doors and keep your curtains open. Closed curtains are a dead giveaway for burglars. Also, Tucson property managers recommend putting some of your interior lights on a timer to turn on and go off throughout the evening to act as deterrent for home break-ins.
